TODAY'S 5 PRACTICAL ENGLISH TIPS
1 November 2026
Let's make our English more natural, confident and effective with these five useful lessons!

GRAMMAR CORNER: SAY vs. TELL
Both verbs are used when communicating something, but their structures are different.

Say something.

Tell someone something.

She said that she was busy.

She told me that she was busy.

She told that she was busy.

Remember: Tell usually needs a person as its object.

VOCABULARY BOOSTER: BORROW vs. LEND
These two words are often confused.

Borrow: To take something temporarily from someone.

Lend: To give something temporarily to someone.

Can I borrow your pen?

Could you lend me your pen?

Quick trick: Borrow = Receive | Lend = Give.

PRONUNCIATION TIP: SILENT LETTERS
Some English words contain letters that are written but not pronounced.

Know – K is silent.

Knife – K is silent.

Write – W is silent.

Honest – H is silent.

Listen – T is silent.

Challenge: Can you think of two more English words containing silent letters?

SPEAKING SKILLS: SOUND MORE POLITE!
Instead of making direct requests, try using these polite expressions.

Open the door.

Could you open the door, please?

Give me some water.

Could I have some water, please?

Help me.

Would you mind helping me?

Remember: Polite language makes communication friendlier and more effective.

WRITING SKILLS: AVOID RUN-ON SENTENCES
A run-on sentence occurs when two independent sentences are joined incorrectly without appropriate punctuation or a connecting word.

I was tired I went to bed early.

I was tired, so I went to bed early.

I was tired. I went to bed early.

Tip: Use a full stop, a suitable conjunction or appropriate punctuation to connect your ideas correctly.
